Value
Sounds / Interactive / Computational Installation 2024
INTRO
Value is a sound installation that explores the randomness and uniqueness of life’s journey through a mechanical dance of motion and sound. The installation consists of three motors and two gears controlling two distinct rods. One rod holds a ball that swings unpredictably, striking nine surrounding pipes to produce spontaneous, ever-changing sound patterns—symbolizing the unpredictability and individuality of human experiences.
The second rod carries a spotlight that follows the ball’s movement but never fully illuminates it, creating a visual metaphor for the elusive nature of meaning and self-discovery. Through this interplay of light, motion, and sound, Value invites audiences to reflect on the uncertainty of life and the personal significance we assign to our own paths. By engaging both the visual and auditory senses, the installation encourages contemplation of fate, agency, and the intangible forces that shape our existence.
Every 30 seconds, the structure tilts 40 degrees forward or backward along the horizontal axis. Once the tilting motion stops, it randomly rotates clockwise or counterclockwise by an unpredictable angle. During this rotation, a suspended ball has a certain probability of striking the surrounding steel pipes of varying sizes, each producing distinct resonant tones upon impact.
